2023 ICC Men's Player of the Month January Nominees

2023 ICC Men's Player of the Month - 11icBlog2

For the ICC Men's Player of the Month Award for January 2023, two opening hitters and a new-ball speedster have been shortlisted.

Devon Conway

Devon Conway had a strong January, scoring three hundreds and two fifties across formats. Conway started 2023 with a fluent 122 and a golden duck after finishing the year with scores of 92 and 18* in the first of two Tests against Pakistan in Karachi. The second match ended in a hard-fought draw to even the series.

Before the left-hander atoned for his mistakes with back-to-back match-winning hundreds to help his side win the three-match series 2-1, he made another golden duck in the first ODI of the tour.

The form continued during the white-ball tour of India, where he single-handedly lead a challenging 386-run chase with a stroke-filled 138 off 100 in the third ODI in Indore. The Blackcaps' 21-run victory, their first success on the tour, came after Conway hit 52 off 35 in the first of three T20Is in Ranchi.

Shubman Gill

2023 looks to be the year of Shubman Gill after a successful 2022 in which he succeeded in ODIs and Tests, considering his exceptional consistency in white-ball formats so far.

In the first T20I match in Mumbai against Sri Lanka, where he only scored seven runs, Gill received his first T20I cap. He then recorded another low-single-digit total in the second match in Pune. His reliable 46 in the third T20I in Rajkot may have been considered a footnote to Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant century, which helped India win the series by 91 runs.

After that, Gill scored 70, 21 and 116 in the three one-day internationals against the island nation, but it was his stunning performance in the opening ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad that truly stole the show. On a day when none of his teammates reached 28, the 23-year-old batsman scored an astounding 208 runs off just 149 balls. Gill became the youngest player to reach the 200-run mark in ODIs after hitting three straight sixes off Lockie Ferguson.

He followed that up by scoring 40* and 112 in his subsequent two appearances to finish the series with an aggregate of 360, which is tied for the greatest score in a three-match ODI series and ties Babar Azam's record against the West Indies in 2016–17.

However, Gill wasn't done yet. He began February 2023 with an incredible 126* off 63 in the three-match T20I decider against the Blackcaps in Ahmedabad, making him the fifth Indian hitter to score hundreds in all three international forms.

Mohammed Siraj

In recent ODIs, Mohammed Siraj has distinguished himself as India's fast-bowling attack's leader, demonstrating his prowess repeatedly, notably with the new ball, with Jasprit Bumrah absent due to a lengthy injury break. In the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Player Rankings, where he was named the No. 1 bowler in ODIs, his outstanding performance was recognized.

Siraj finished the series with the most wickets after returning 2/30 from seven overs in the high-scoring first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. He followed that up with figures of 3/30 and 4/32 in his subsequent two appearances. The right-arm quick then claimed 4/46 from 10 overs against New Zealand in a high-scoring thriller at his home venue in Hyderabad before delivering an improbable 6-1-10-1 in an outstanding opening burst in the second ODI in Raipur.

Through the five innings, Siraj kept up an outstanding economy of 3.82, consistently bothering the top-order batters. Among them were Avishka Fernando (three times), Kusal Mendis (twice), Devon Conway, Tom Latham, and Henry Nicholls.

Who among this 3 amazing player will get a chance to get the Title of January's ICC Player of the Month?
