The official captain of the Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant, may not be able to participate in the next Indian Premier League 2023 tournament, but head coach Ricky Ponting believes that Pant still has a role to play.
If Pant has recovered sufficiently, Ponting would like to have him around the team during the season.
Pant was injured in a car accident on December 30 and is predicted to miss most of 2023. He tore three crucial knee ligaments; two were repaired on January 7 and surgery on the third is anticipated for February.
Ponting also mentioned that the Capitals were looking for a wicketkeeper-batter to take Pant's role, but he emphasized how challenging that search might be.
Who can replace Rishabh Pant?
Capitals purchased five players during the December IPL 2023 auction, but no wicketkeeper. England's Phil Salt, who is now donning the gloves for Pretoria Capitals in SA20 in South Africa, is the only other full-time wicketkeeping option in their lineup.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 event, Mumbai's Indian wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Khan has played sporadically.
The Pant-Ponting combo led the Capitals to a fifth-place finish in the IPL in 2022 and a loss in the second qualifier in 2021. When Shreyas Iyer served as captain in 2020, they recorded their highest result by coming in second.
Would Syed Mushtaq Ali succeed to replace Rishabh Pant as the Captain of Delhi Capitals?
