Career and Accomplishment of India's First NBA Draft: Satnam Singh

Satnam Singh is the first Indian player to be drafted in National Basketball Association or NBA , playing under Dallas Mavericks , selected as the 52nd overall pick of the 2015 NBA draft. He played the center position.


Satnam Singh Basketball Career


Year 2010, Satnam Singh led the Punjab state youth team to a national championship , leading BFI or the Basketball Federation of India Singh was chosen to play at NBA Basketball Without Border camp in Singapore. He played against the member of Indian National Team and manage to compete with them. The BFI’s head coach Harish Sharma , recommended Singh for IMGR to consider him for a scholarship but he was too old for the scholarship. Satnam Singh was later awarded a scholarship under IMGR basketball training academy and shifted to Bradenton , Florida in September 2010.


During 2014-15 season, he averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in less than 20 minutes per game but due to his poor English and lack of American citizenship he was ineligible for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).


Year 2015, Satnam Singh was announce for 2015 NBA Draft , he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with 52nd overall pick . He became the first Indian-born player to be drafted in National Basketball Association , he also became the first player to enter NBA draft without playing in college , overseas professionally or in NBA Development League.


July 2015, Singh joined the Mavericks for 2015 NBA Summer League . On the same year of October , Singh was acquired by the Texas Legends, the Mavericks affiliate D-League. A month after Satnam Singh made his professional debut against Austin Spurs


February 2016, Satnam Singh had his season best game against the Raptors 905 . he also appeared in 9 games for the Texas Legends during the 2015-16 season.


October 2016, Singh was re-acquired by Texas Legends and after playing with the Legends during the 216-17 season, he joined the Dallas Mavericks for 2017 NBA Summer League.


Year 2017, he was signed a contract with the UBA Pro Basketball League in India and on year 2018, Singh took part in UBA US Pro Performance Camp in Arizona.


Year 2018 Singh sign with St. John’s Edge of National Basketball League in Canada .


On July 2019, he was traded alongside two second round picks to Memphis Grizzlies.
